Ectropion

Ectropion is the term used to describe the outward turning of the upper and/or lower eyelid margin away from the globe of the eye. As a result of this abnormal eyelid posture, the tear fluid will have a tendency to spill away from the eye rather than lubricate the eye naturally. Ectropion will generally cause excessive tearing (outside of the eye), dryness of the front surface of the eye, and irritation.

Artificial lubricating agents are helpful with this condition. With inflamed tissues, warm compresses and/or topical antibiotic ointment are recommended. Definitive treatment usually requires surgery; however, surgery is typically delayed until it is evident that the eyelid turning will not resolve spontaneously.
